The classical  Legong is a dance that was traditionally performed as entertainment for the king. The young females are wrapped from head to ankle in hand painted gold brocade, with glitter gold and sparkling mirrors topped with frangipani flowers. Their dance pantomimes ancient stories and portrays all that is feminine and beautiful.

The endless metaphysical battle between good and devil is symbolically re-enacted by two weird characters, Barong and Rangda, who by their performance reenact the magic power of the village and restore the balance between these two contrary forces. The barong is a strange creature created by two men inside a highly decorated framework that represents a stylized animal, often a kind of Chinese tiger.

The performance is a combination of ancient ritual, dance, and drama.  This dance features a male chorus that chants rhythmically, circled around a torch. They became entranced throughout the dance to the beat of the varied chants and swaying movements.

Various characters, many representing monkeys, make an appearance dressed in elaborate costumes to enact a story of heroism. For the finale, a dancer stomps on hot flames without feeling any pain.
