NORMAN ISLAND, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS, CARIBBEAN |
|
Legend plays a
large part in the history of Norman Island with tales of
treasure caves as 15th century documents link it with Spanish galleons
and pirating. Norman Island is reputedly the
model for the epic “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson. |

Norman Island
After
a quick sail across the channel, we anchored in the
Bight among hundreds of mooring balls at Norman Island. The
little sandy beach which was deserted when we were there years ago was now a bar
and shops.
|
|
The island is
laden with trails and we hiked most of them. It was
a nice break from the windy cool weather we had been
experiencing. By the time we climbed to the top of
the hills, we looked down to see a pool of mooring
balls, empty and waiting for the next influx. By the
time we returned to the anchorage, hundreds of boats
would be scrambling for the last empty spot to tie
up to for the night. balls. |

Caves
We snorkelled around the Caves
at the head of the Norman Island Bight. I guess we are
spoilt by the fabulous underwater adventures around the
world, because we did not find much of interest.
|
Although we could never stay
up late enough at night to partake in the raunchy parties
there, we went to the old 98 foot schooner, the William Thornton (otherwise known as the
Willie T) permanently anchored in the Bight. Hamburgers and
beer were the order of the day. |

|
|
We pulled up
anchor and headed across the channel to Tortolla to
provision and check out Road Town and Nanny Cay. The wind
was light but we enjoyed the motor sail. |
