Visit with Mom & Dad... - SAIL TO MUSKET COVE

We sailed Ascension out of Vuda Point (pic left) on a bright sunny day, with not much wind. We ended up motoring to charge up our batteries and make water but it was a pleasant trip to Malololailai Island, the second largest island in the Mamanuca Group.

Mom & Dad ready for a new adventure in Fiji

We had to be cautious of the numerous reefs. The markers are hard to spot and often the passes are marked only by a bird on a stick!

Musket Cove...

June 2005

Malololailai Island is the home of the Musket Cove Yacht Club and several resorts offering bars, restaurants and nice beaches. We all stayed on the boat which was on a mooring in front of the Yacht Club.

As soon as we set our anchor, we lowered the dinghy into the water and took a little ride around to explore the area.

We took the dinghy around a lagoon peppered with exclusive bure-type accommodations. We also found at least 3 resorts offering swimming pools, bars and restaurants. There is even a store, dive shop, showers and laundry facilities.

Snorkeling Adventure...
Gord got the dinghy ready while Mom & I arranged to rent some snorkel gear. Dad was still suffering from his cold so remained aboard Ascension.
Donna came with us and we headed to a spot near a sandbar quite a distance from the shore. It made for an easy dinghy entry and the sandbar, seemingly protruding out of the sea from the middle of nowhere, was an unusual sight.

The snorkeling was very good...so many fish that they were biting at your mask.

Birthday Massage...

Beach Combing...
When the tide is out, there is lots of opportunity to walk the beaches.. We crossed the bridge at the lagoon and hiked along the beach to the point.

Poolside...

We had breakfast beside the pool at Musket Cove Resort. It was a beautiful spot but with resort pricing!

Relaxing on Ascension...
It was nice to be able to visit, eat and relax on Ascension quietly sitting at anchor.

June 4, 2005
Unfortunately, we had to head back to Vuda Point. Fortunately, we had the most perfect sail with flat seas and a gentle breeze that provided a downwind run using just the Genoa.
