KUPANG WELCOME DINNER & PARTY, TIMOR |
July 30
The rally participants were invited to attend the formal Gala Dinner and Welcome Party with the Mayor of Kupang. We landed our dinghies on th with the Mayor of Kupang. We landed our dinghies on the beach already jam packed with rubber duckies attended by the Rally Boys in Blue and made our way to Teddy's Bar, where elaborate table settings beckoned us. |

Pork Feast
A pig roast was prepared for us along with a buffet of noodles, vegetables, sweet bread, potatoes and the usual condiment of very, very hot sauce.
The resident dog stood by hopefully when the carving was near completion. |

Men and percussion instruments provided the background ambience for visiting with friends. |

Afterwards, there was the usual rock music and everyone got up to dance but this time some of the local (the ones involved in the rally organizing I think) joined in.
|
After dinner, there was more traditional Indonesian dancing from groups from several regencies. |

Dancin' the Night Away
Gord was commandeered by a young Indonesian woman and after he taught her to jive, there was no stopping her. She would not let him sit down and when he finally brought her to our table to introduce her to me, it wasn’t long before she had grabbed him and was back on the dance floor before I could get a turn! I had to laugh because she was having such a great time! |

|
We partied until the wee hours of the morn.
After the music had stopped playing and most of the cruisers finally dispersed, I found Gord behind the wall playing guitar with the lead guitarist from the excellent band we had been dancing to the first night we arrived. He wanted to set up his equipment on stage and have Gord play with them! But it was late, we were tired and he had to decline the invite. It would be so easy to spend a lot of time in Kupang, just getting to know the friendly and interesting locals. |
