Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world, although Bali is predominately Hindu. They resist
western influence and from what we have seen, it seems to foster strong families and communities, spiritual strength in adversity, cooperative values and honest behavior.
The people are gentle and harmonious, the friendliest and most welcoming we have ever encountered. With so little money even to buy rice, they were generous and giving with what they had to offer.
Media outlets in the western world
have attempted to depict Indonesia, but it is a
country you must visit in person in order to fully
understand and appreciate its character and the
people who live there. The bombing in Bali has destroyed
Indonesia's economy and the people are really struggling to regain their tourist industry. We have met so many families that have been directly and indirectly affected by the terrorist act, through no fault of the gentle Balinese people.
The sailing from island to island was some of the best we have had, with most spinnaker runs in protected flat water. Although most people encountered no wind necessitating a lot of motoring, that was not our experience in the eastern islands. However, once we reached Bali and westward, it was a constant motor boat ride. Fuel was readily available at most places, cheap, in any event.
